Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in which loose skin and fat deposits are removed.  It is common for people to suffer from this skin flaws as they age and as a result of sun damage as well.  Heredity also plays a role in such a deformity.

Upper eyelid surgery is not meant only for the aged ones, but younger people who develop puffy eyes, due to any reason, undergo this cosmetic surgery to correct their figure.  Let’s find out more about this surgical procedure.

What Upper Eyelid Surgery can Do

Upper eyelid surgery is basically used to correct:

  • Puffiness in the middle of the upper eyelid and inner corner caused by herniation of fat
  • Hooding of the upper lid, or excessive skin on the upper eyelid

Upper eyelid surgery can be combined with other cosmetic methods like chemical or laser resurfacing treatment to correct many skin flaws.  Due to its cosmetic nature, this surgery is not usually covered by any insurance policy unless the drooping of the upper eyelids obstructs the vision.

Many people undergo this surgery since it improves the appearance of the face and helps you achieve a younger look.  When all the aging signs around the eyes are gone, you will definitely appear younger and healthier looking.  You will no longer appear tired or exhausted.  The good thing with upper eyelid surgery is that its effects may last for several years.

How the Surgery is Performed

Excess skin and fatty tissues are removed from the area by making incisions in the natural skin fold.  Before closing the incisions, the muscles and orbital septum is tightened.  The incisions remain hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelids.  A special instrument with very fine electrocautery is used to perform the surgery.  The procedure can complete in  one to three hours.  The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia.

Risks of Upper Eyelid Surgery

When the surgery is performed properly by a qualified and experience surgeon, you will have minimum chances of getting infection or reactions to the medications.  The surgeon evaluates your medical condition before performing the surgery and acts appropriately.

As far as the pain is concerned, you may experience a tight sensation around the eyes and the discomfort may last for a day or so.  This surgery is not a painful procedure, and if necessary, a mild pain reliever can help the condition.

When we talk about the complications associated with this surgery, we find few complications that are not common.  Complications include scarring, dryness, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes, bleeding behind the eyes, decreased sensation in the treated area, difficulty in closing the eyes, etc.
