How Is Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Performed?

Tummy tuck is not a simple cosmetic surgery.  It demands both the qualification and skill of a surgeon.  At the same time, it needs lot of care both during and after the procedure.  The results mostly lie in the hands of a surgeon and on the patient who has to take care of the post surgery instructions.

Abdominoplasty Procedures

Before you undergo a tummy tuck surgery, you will be given two options.  The surgeon will recommend you the suitable or desirable option that goes well with your case.

Complete Abdominoplasty: In this procedure, the abdomen will be cut from hipbone to hipbone to expose wider area that helps the surgery.  In this method, incision will be made at the level of the public hair.  Tissue and muscles will be contoured as needed.  The belly button will get a new opening after this procedure.

Tubes for fluid or blood drainage will be placed under the skin, which will normally be removed in a few days after the surgery.

Partial Tummy Tuck: If the fat deposit is located below the naval, smaller incision will be required.  In this case, a partial abdominoplasty can be the option. In this procedure, the belly button will not be disturbed, as the skin will be separated between the belly button and the line of incision. The procedure is also performed with endoscope where a small camera is attached to the end of the tube.

Procedure of Tummy Tuck

The surgeon will decide on the medications and type of anesthesia required in your case. This is essential to prevent you from feeling any discomfort during the procedure.

The incision will be made according to the chosen technique.  The shape and length of the incision also depend on the method employed.

Weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and sutured, and tissue, excess fat, and skin are removed during the procedure. This is done through the incisions made for this purpose.

If necessary, a second incision will be made to remove excess skin from the upper abdomen.

The surgery will be over with the closure of the ‘wounds’, which will be done by skin adhesives, sutures, etc.   A thin tube will be placed under the skin to drain any excess fluid or blood that may collect in the treated area.  The tube is removed in few days after the surgery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

When the procedure is performed properly and when you follow the post surgery instructions carefully, you will have a normal recovery.  Complete recovery may take several weeks.  Once you have recovered completely, you can resume any physical exercise program if you wish.  Such strenuous exercises have to be completely avoided during the recovery period.

After the surgery, it is normal to feel some discomfort.  You may have pain and swelling for a couple of days.  You will, however, be given medication to minimize the discomfort.  Numbness, bruising and tiredness may be experienced initially.  All these are the normal side effects of the surgery and you don’t have to worry.  What matters here is the sign of any complications as a result of the treatment.  Again, you don’t have to worry since a qualified surgeon will take care of many such risks, and you will be made aware of them.  In case you find anything happening abnormally, contact the surgeon immediately.
