Cosmetic industry has many branches. Well-aware people don’t keep quiet and keep doing one thing or the other to protect the appearance, and various cosmetic treatments are there to help them; chemical peel is one of the cosmetic procedures that help people keep the skin in good shape and to get rid of aging signs and other skin irregularities.
Chemical Peel, an Ancient Treatment
Chemical peel is in use since the ancient times. Different primitive types of peeling agents were in use for the same purpose that the chemical peels of today do. Egyptians, for instance, had used alabaster, salt, lactic acid, etc to address certain skin weaknesses. Later on, one after the other, many peeling agents are brought into cosmetic use and still the development is on.
How Chemical Peels are Helpful
With the use of a peeling agent, mostly a safe and very mild acid, a controlled injury or burn is introduced to the outer skin layers. As a result, the target skin layer(s) are removed by means of flaking or peeling, and when the damaged skin layer is removed, the skin naturally produces new layers to take the place of the replaced ones. This skin resurfacing procedure needs certain types of acids, and certain degree of concentration of the acids can be applied to the treated area. The harsher the peel, or the more concentrated the solution is, the deeper will be its effect; and the deeper the results, the more thorough or deeper will be the results. This is the reason that harsher or more concentrated peels are used to address skin flaws of deeper nature.
Chemical peels are used to fade or remove many types of skin flaws. You can get rid of aging signs and damages to the skin due to any other reason. You can treat wrinkles, fine lines, acne, acne scars, uneven pigmentation, and many other common skin flaws, which ruin one’s appearance and self-esteem.
Types of Chemical Peels
Different kinds of peels are in use with varying concentrations. What has to be used depends on the conditions to treat. Some peels can be done at home, without involving a skin specialist, while some peels must only be done by trained and qualified skin care professionals. We can categorize the peels in three major groups:
Superficial Peels: The gentlest and smallest of all chemical peels, these peels are safest and can be used at home by experienced users. Most of the peeling agents are extracted from natural sources. Alpha hydroxyl acids are the main superficial peeling agents.
Medium Depth Peel: Harsher than the light or superficial peels this kind of peeling agent has the ability to address skin flaws of relative deeper nature. This kind of peel should be done by a skin care professional.
Deep Chemical Peel: It is the harshest or strongest of all peels, used to address skin flaws that don’t respond to other peels. This peel must only be done under strict medical supervision.
Side Effects and Complications
Each peel is associated with certain side effects and risks. The lighter the peel, the milder will be its side effects. The complications of a deep chemical peel also include risks of very serious nature.
No peel should be tried, no matter even if it is a light peel, unless you have the require peeling knowledge.
Experienced peel users may post here their personal experiences and, at the same time, if you want to know more, please post the details.
