Chemical peels are skin-resurfacing techniques where certain safe acids are used.  The penetration can be controlled by using the right type of acid and its strength that suits the treating condition.  As more and more people are turning to this cosmetic means to correct their appearance, newer peeling agents are being introduced to achieve better results and to minimize risks or side effects of a chemical peel treatment.  When you go out to have a peeling treatment done, you can find a variety before you to select from.

However, not every peel suits every skin condition and not every person is considered fit for a chemical peel treatment, especially the harsher ones.  Let’s find out about the types of chemical peels that we can find in the cosmetic market.

Chemical Peels and Peeling Agents

A variety of peeling acids are used in chemical peels.  Many branded peels are available in the market and you can also create custom peels to suit an individual condition.  Experienced estheticians sometimes make their own peel to treat certain skin conditions.

In the light peeling agents group, you have the AHA or alpha hydroxyl acids that are mostly extracted from natural sources.  In this group, you have glycolic acid (derived from sugar cane), malic acid (derived from apples), lactic acid (derived from sour milk, etc), and tartaric acid (derived from grapes).  In the BHA or beta hydroxyl acid group, you have salicylic acid (derived from wintergreen and birch bark); you have retinoic acid (derived from retinoids, TCA or trichloroacetic acid, and phenol that is the strongest of all peels.

Each acid has its own properties, and it can be used as solo treatment or in combination with other acids.  Most of the peeling agents are used in varying strengths or concentrations.

Different Types of Chemical Peels

Having seen the different peeling agents or acids used in chemical peel treatments, we can conveniently group them according to their mode of action.  We can divide them in three different types of chemical peels – Light, Medium, and Deep chemical peels.  Let’s see how they work on the skin.

Light or Superficial Chemical Peel:  Its penetration in the skin remains very superficial and this type of peels are best suited to treat skin flaws of very superficial nature.  The treatment has to be repeated to get the desired results.

Medium depth peel: Its penetration is deeper than the light peels and, therefore, it is able to correct skin flaws that are rather deep in nature.  Since this peel works more deeply, its use is better left for experienced users or skin care professionals.

Deep Peel: It has the ability to penetrate and work on the deepest skin layer but, at the same time, it is associated with many risks and complications due to its deeper action.   This peel must strictly be done by qualified skin care professionals only.

Different types of chemical peel treatments are made available in the cosmetic industry and you can undergo a chemical peel treatment that suits the best your skin type and the treating conditions.  Visit to a dermatologist or any skin specialist can help you select the right chemical peel to ensure you get the desired results and prevent any unwanted surprises.

Experienced chemical peel users should post their comments and, at the same time, those who want to clear some doubts, may take part in this discourse.  Such an exchange of information can be of great help to any peel user.
